This blog is the local information and discussion resource for the WEP Lewisham branch, just one of 73 branches nationwide, with now over 45,000 members and registered supporters, more than 600 of these in Lewisham alone.
WE are pushing for equal representation in politics, business, industry and throughout working life. WE are pressing for equal pay and an equal opportunity to thrive. WE are campaigning for equal parenting and caregiving and shared responsibilities at home to give everyone equal opportunities both in family life and in the workplace. WE’re researching and insisting on a health care system which promotes mental as well as physical health. WE urge an education system that creates opportunities for all children and an understanding of why this matters. WE strive for equal treatment of women by and in culture, media and sport. WE require an end to violence against women.
WE are working to bring all these things to Lewisham. In 2018, we stood three candidates in the local council elections in May 2018.
Rebecca Manson Jones represented WEP Lewisham in Ladywell ward persuading 1 in 4 voters to vote for her and Kate Vang in Brockley ward and Mandu Reid in Lewisham Central ward both put WEP on the political Lewisham map. Mandu Reid then became WEP’s first-ever candidate in parliamentary by-election coming a tremendous 5th.
Rebecca and Mandu have both since been elected to the national WEP policy committee as Equal HealthCare and Equal Parenting and Care-giving Spokespeople.
